Training to be a Barber

Perhaps you’ve always had a knack for hair styling, but in order to turn your passion into a career, it’d benefit you to undergo some sort of formal training. Just like getting a college degree showcases your skill and dedication to your field of study, so does undergoing training and getting the proper certification to be a barber give you an edge up in the cosmetology field. People tend to trust their hair to professionals with licenses and are more likely to patronize them over non-licensed individuals.

Where to Train

To become a barber, you need to go to a school of cosmetology like the Academy of Hair Design. This school was founded to help students reach their full potential in the field of cosmetology. The unique curriculum offered here is specially designed to prepare you for a career in grooming and beauty.

Some of the skills you can expect to learn at this institution include the following:

-Professional salon techniques
-Business management
-Innovative marketing techniques
-Salon product knowledge

Learn at Your Pace

While some people might be able to attend cosmetology school full-time, others might prefer to still hold down their current jobs while gaining the skills they need for advancement. Fortunately, you can attend school either full-time or part-time to work towards your needed 1500 hours for completion. A typical full-time schedule consists of 33.5 hours per week and usually takes just under a year (approximately 11 months) to complete. If you prefer to simply take one or two classes here and there as it suits you, then you can certainly do that as well.

Hands-On Experience

One of the most essential components of any cosmetology school is the hands-on learning experience. Since you’ll be cutting and styling people’s hair for a living as a barber, it’s essential that you have first-hand experience in doing so before you’re released on the job field. The Academy of Hair Design not only provides you with plenty of classroom instruction but a student salon experience as well where you’ll get to practice on real clients. This helps you learn how to successfully do the following:

-Conduct a proper consultation
-Develop salon skills
-Build a clientele

Getting Your License

After completing the program, you’ll still be required to take an exam in the state you’ll be practicing in to obtain your license. This particular academy preps you to pass the Texas cosmetology exam, but many states offer a reciprocity process that allows you to apply for your license in another state with your Texas license.

Training at a cosmetology school not only allows you to learn invaluable skills, but it also helps you create a diverse portfolio and to network with barber shops and salons where you might eventually obtain a position.
